Aside from post-mortem photography, one of the more cringe-inducing of 19th century mourning customs has to be the use of human hair as a memento mori. These locks and skeins were often comprised of intergenerational hair woven into framed wreaths and jewelry trinkets.

Please be aware, this is disturbing subject matter for some.
I post this not to shock, but for its evocative qualities.
Given the akward positioning and the woman’s glassy eyes,
it is speculated that both subjects were photographed post-moretm.
Though its very off-putting to modern day people,
this was an accepted way to remember the dead in the Victorian era.
